Language and Cultural Experiences
I can speak basic French and Russian, and am currently studying Chinese. I’ve been living and working abroad since I left school. I traveled around Europe for three months when I was 18 / 19, and also worked with children on a voluntary work-camp in Lithuania. I had a job in New York State, USA, for another three months during my first year at university, and studied in the Hague, Holland, for six in my second year. When I finished university, I spent some time with groups of foreign students, including Chinese, showing them around Liverpool and helping them to enjoy a cultural experience.
About Myself
I was born in a small town in England, on the border of Wales. I lived there until 1997 when I went to study in Liverpool. I
have a younger brother who is currently teaching children in Harbin. My interests include music (I can play the saxophone,
piano and flute), writing (my degree is in journalism) and practicing yoga.
Why I came to China.
I feel that there are many changes occurring in China at the moment, especially Shanghai, and I wanted to see and
experience them for myself. There are many opportunities here, and I feel that coming to Shanghai will help me develop
both personally and as a teacher.
Why I chose to work at Kai En?
I initially joined Kai En as a full-time teacher because it seemed like a professional, well-run establishment. I was also drawn to the modern philosophy of English teaching, which is very different to anything I have experienced before. In addition, Kai En has a lot of training to ensure its teachers and therefore its students receive the best. I have recently become part of this programme, and it is very rewarding to be involved in this.
