Teaching Standards at Kai En: What Students Expect from their Teacher

Generally speaking English classrooms have been dominated a by teacher-centered, lecture-style format. This has provided little opportunity for self-expression. Students have found English study to be boring, repetitive and uninspiring. Therefore, when students enroll at Kai En, they are looking for a completely different experience. They expect to attend classes:

    • That help them to increase their active vocabulary by using relevant and interesting materials
    • That help them to build their confidence to speak English
    • That help them use useful language to communicate rather than memorize language for tests

    Students expect their teacher:

    • to be outgoing, humorous and to enjoy teaching
    • to have a clear accent and to be professional (well dressed, punctual and well prepared for class).
    • to be friendly, helpful and to care about their progress as individuals
    • to prepare an interesting and lively class by preparing a variety of activities
    • to plan and implement interactive classes that facilitate active participation by the students
    • to give focused and meaningful feedback on their English and on their class performance
    • to be familiar with basic classroom management techniques such as, monitoring, giving feedback, using the whiteboard effectively, teaching vocabulary, correcting mistakes, giving clear instructions and explanations

Are you a suitable Kai En teacher?

If you can answer yes to these questions, you will fit in well with Kai En’s approach to teaching English. Not only will you enjoy working with us, but you will develop as a teacher.

    • I believe providing students with lots of opportunities to speak will help them learn English
    • I believe that students learn best when they get feedback on their speaking
    • I believe that a teacher should enjoy working with students and create a good learning environment where students speak a lot while the teacher monitors and gives them feedback
    • I believe that students learn best when they are motivated and a teacher must conduct interesting classes in order to motivate students.
    • I want to work in an organization that focuses on delivering quality teaching to students
    • I want to receive further training and develop my teaching skills further.
    • I believe that I’m an effective teacher because of my outgoing personality and ability to build rapport with students.

    Salary and Pay Structure

Our salary offer takes into account the fact that teachers have different qualifications and different levels of experience. At Kai En, we conduct a performance evaluation during the contract year and provide feedback to each teacher.

    Pay Structure

A teacher’s salary has two components. First is the Base Salary. The base salary is paid for all hours taught up to 72 hours per month for Contract A and up to 92 hours for Contract B. This is a guaranteed salary regardless if the actual number of hours taught are less than those mentioned.

Second is the Overtime Pay. Overtime pay is the hourly rate of in 110RMB per hour and is paid for each hour of teaching over 72 hours / 92 hours within a month.

    Setting Salary Levels

In recruiting and developing teachers we recognize that teachers have different qualifications, levels of experience, and motivations for coming to Shanghai. Therefore we have two different pay schemes:

    Contract 1A

    Salary range of 8,200RMB – 10,840RMB

Teachers are generally allocated a schedule of 5 days a week and are paid 8,200 RMB a month for a 72 hour contract. Any hours taught above 72 are paid at the overtime rate of 110RMB per hour.

Generally speaking, teachers work between 80 – 96 hours per month [approximately 22 teaching hours per week], which generates a monthly income of between 9,080RMB and 10,840RMB [see salary calculations below]

    Contract 1B

    Salary range of 10,120RMB – 13,000RMB

At Kai En if a teacher wishes to work a minimum of 92 hours per month, they are then placed on our Contract 1B. This means that they begin with our basic salary of 10,120RMB

Generally speaking, teachers work between 106 – 112 hours per month [approximately 28 teaching hours per week], which generates a monthly income of between 11,660RMB and 12,320RMB [see salary calculations below]

    Overtime / Work loads

There may be occasions when the school will request the teacher to work over 96 hours in any given month [more than 24 hours per week] under Contract 1A. In these circumstances, the teacher must agree to such a workload and has the right to refuse any hours above 24 per week. Should the teacher agree or ask for a teaching hours above 24 hours per week, the teacher will be paid the overtime rate of 110RMB per hour.

Salary: What can a Teacher expect to earn per month – Salary calculations

Average Monthly salaries at Kai En [Salary calculations]

    Contract 1A

    Pay Scale

    • Starting pay – 8,200RMB for a monthly teaching load of 72 hours.
    • 110RMB overtime for each and every teaching hour above 72 per month.
    • Typical working months are between 80 hours and 96 hours

    80 hours

    8,200RMB [72 hours]

    + 8 hours of overtime x 110RMB = 880RMB per month

    Total monthly salary = 8,200RMB + 880RMB = 9,080RMB

    • 96 hours

    8,200RMB [72 hours]

    + 24 hours of overtime x 110RMB = 2,640RMB per month

    Total monthly salary = 8,200RMB + 2,640RMB = 10,840RMB

    Contract 1B

    Pay Scale

    • Starting pay – 10,120RMB for a monthly teaching load of 92 hours.
    • 110RMB overtime for each and every teaching hour above 92 per month.
    • Typical working months are between 106 hours and 112 hours

    106 hours

    10,120RMB [92 hours]

    + 14 hours of overtime x 110RMB = 1,540RMB per month

    Total monthly salary = 10,120RMB + 1,540RMB = 11,660RMB

    • 112 hours

    10,120RMB [92 hours]

    + 20 hours of overtime x 110RMB = 2,200RMB per month

    Total monthly salary = 10,120RMB + 2,200RMB = 12,320RMB

    Vacations

Teachers receive 4 weeks and five days (a week being defined as 6 days, i.e. 29 days) paid vacation time during their year contract. Christmas, one day, New Years, one day, and because government holidays change from year to year, the remaining 27 days will be allocated between the three main national holidays of Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) – nine days, May Day (May 1st) – nine days and the National Holiday (October 1st)- nine days. The school branch manager will arrange these 27 days in accordance with school scheduling and government regulations.

    Airline Ticket

There are two different recruitment scenarios.

    • Recruited and hired from abroad:

Kai En pays for an economy class airline ticket from the place of origin to Shanghai and from Shanghai to the place of origin up to a limit of US$1,000. One month before fulfillment of the teaching contract the teacher will be reimbursed for their ticket to Shanghai and Kai En will purchase a ticket to the teacher’s place of origin or pay the teacher an equivalent amount in RMB.

    • Recruited and hired within China:

For teachers recruited within China, we pay the teacher’s transport cost from his/her current Chinese location to Shanghai up to a limit of US$500.

Teachers are expected to inform Kai En about the cost of the airline ticket before purchase in order to ensure later reimbursement.

NOTE: The School will pay the teacher’s transport up to the limits mentioned above. This, however, does not mean that should the ticket be below this limit, the School will pay the difference to the teacher.

For example, if the teacher’s return flight cost is US$850, the School will reimburse the teacher the cost of the ticket. The School will NOT pay the teacher the remaining US$150. The School understands that it is our obligation to provide transport for teachers who travel to work in Shanghai. The School does not expect the teacher to make profit on the transportation arrangements.

    Medical Insurance

We would like our teachers to have a pleasant, secure and full experience when in Shanghai, with continued good health as part of making your stay here a positive one. Although Shanghai is an extremely safe city, minor medical and health problems can exist, such treatment generally takes place at international clinics, which can be very expensive. We therefore recommend that insurance is taken out to offset this risk. Kai En has negotiated a comprehensive medical insurance plan with an international company specializing in health insurance for expatriates. The InterGlobal Healthcare Limited Schools Programme offers teachers a high quality insurance program that not only covers evacuation in an emergency and in-patient hospital costs, but also allows the teacher to claim for out-patient fees. Kai En subsidises the plan to a value of US$100 per annum per teacher. We also make the initial up-front payment on the teacher’s behalf, deducting the teacher’s contribution from her/his salary over the period of twelve months, making it much more financially manageable for the teacher.

The teacher’s annual premium rates range between US$470 (age range 18-25) and US$720 (age range 35-39). There is no deductible (excess) to be paid. The insurance company, InterGlobal Healthcare Limited, has direct billing agreements in place with several western clinics and hospitals, meaning that the teacher does not have to submit claim forms later. These Medical Institutions include Worldlink and Concord Clinic, both of which have western doctors fluent in English. If in worst case scenario you are hospitalized this is fully covered in all the best western hospitals of which there are 4 in Shanghai.

The overall maximum amount that can be claimed by any one insured teacher in a year is US$1,250,000 and among the list of benefits covered by the insurance program are:

    • In-patient hospital accommodation
    • Accidents and emergencies, intensive care and theatre costs
    • Surgeons’, anesthetists’, physician’s fees
    • Prescribed medicines and drugs
    • Out-patient primary consultations and treatment (e.g. family doctors’ fees) up to US$6,800
    • In-patient dental care – accidental damage to natural teeth
    • Out-patient dental care – Relief of Dental Pain and accidental damage up to US$850
    • Emergency road ambulance services
    • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
    • Compassionate Home Visit
    • Maternity (only on Gold cover)

This package is only available as a member of the overall school subsidised program. This information is valid through till May 2006.

It is therefore advised that you look closely at this scheme. Further information as well as personal questions, prior to you leaving your home country, can be obtained from Healthline Asia who are our advisers and support company for the Medical Insurance Scheme.

    Schedule and Workload

A working week is defined as 6 days. Because of scheduling (Contract 1A), there will be occasions where the teacher works 5 days a week. Most courses at Kai En take place at the weekend or during the evening on weekdays. Saturday and Sunday classes run from 9am-12pm, and again from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Weekday classes run from 6.30pm – 9.30pm.

    Scheduled Office Time - NONE

At Kai En there is no stipulation requiring teachers to be in the office at any given time – there is no scheduled office hours for our teachers. However, we expect teachers to be at school between one hour and half an hour before their class is due to begin for preparation and teacher training reasons. [Recently hired teachers should be at Kai En at least one hour before the class begins to avail of our trainer’s assistance.]

Teachers often find that they are busy at the weekend and on weekday evenings. Unless they are teaching corporate clients, teachers are likely to have their days free to learn more about Shanghai and Chinese culture.

    Kai En Corporate Training Department

Not all teachers are suitable to teach Corporate Training courses. However, there may be occasions when the teacher will be assigned work in the corporate department.

    English Club

Kai En provides one free English Club to its students everyday. This club is hosted by a foreign teacher and lasts for one hour. It is an extra opportunity for our students to practice their English speaking and listening skills in an informal environment, and each club is based on a pre-prepared topic. All materials and handouts are pre-prepared, and therefore no preparation is required of teachers/counselors. Hosting an English club is considered one teaching hour and is calculated as part of your monthly teaching hours.

    Marketing Activities / Social Activities

Teachers may be asked to participate in marketing promotions. This usually takes the form of attending mini-exhibitions to evaluate students’ English level and give advise on how to improve English. Teachers may also be asked to participate in social activities with students to foster a strong community feeling in the schools.

These activities will be scheduled in advance and will be included as part of the teacher’s working schedule.

    Language consultations

Teachers who have worked at Kai En for a six-month period may be trained to conduct language consultations. In this case, the teacher may be occasionally scheduled in the office to conduct language consultations. This work isn’t included in the terms of the working contract. The teacher will be paid extra for this work.

    Accommodation Assistance

When you arrive at the airport [train station], our relocation assistant will meet you and bring you to a Kai En apartment. The apartment is shared with other Kai En teachers and you are able to stay there for the first few weeks while you adjust to living and working in Shanghai. The apartment is temporary accommodation for the first month, which allows you to acclimatize and gives you an opportunity to talk with your teaching colleagues and find a suitable apartment. You are able to move out whenever you feel it is convenient. For the first week during orientation and training, you won’t be charged for accommodation. Afterwards, you will be asked to pay 100RMB a night + a share of the utilities. This will be deducted from your first paycheck.

If you’re not too jet-lagged the relocation assistant will show you how to get to the school and introduce you to the academic coordinator, teacher trainer and branch manager. During the relocation period, the relocation assistant will:

    • Take you directly to your shared accommodation and will make sure that you settle into life here with the minimum of hassle.
    • Help you to get an apartment by organizing apartment viewings with various real estate agents and by negotiating on your behalf with the landlord [finding an apartment usually takes 3-5 days]
    • show you how to get around the city using the various forms of public transport.
    • help you to begin the legal processes involved in applying for your working visa and residence permit [register with the local police and do your medical check

Landlords often ask for up to three months rental deposit [two months in advance and one month deposit]. Therefore, you should plan your cash flow accordingly. In general, you should plan to have access to US$1,600 to see you through the first month of your relocation period before receiving your first pay check. This may break down as follows:

    • two months rent and one month rental deposit = 9,000RMB
    • travel expenses = 1,000RMB
    • food = 1,500RMB
    • others = 2,000RMB

Teachers wishing to join the Kai En medical plan should include a further 4,500RMB for medical insurance costs.

Finally, in some cases the real estate agent may charge a commission for finding an apartment. Generally speaking we try to use real estate agents who don’t charge a commission, but this isn’t always possible.

    Class Scheduling

Depending on each individual teacher’s needs and the scheduling needs of the school, the branch manager will work with the academic coordinator and teacher trainer to plan you orientation training and to schedule your classes.

    Customer Information

In order to maintain our strong reputation in the market place, Kai En endeavors to communicate with our students clearly about the teaching credentials of our teaching staff. Shortly after arriving at Kai En, the HR manager will ask you to provide relevant information for use in Kai En customer communications and customer education materials. (See www.kaien.com.cn for examples of teacher profiles).
